With a cold look on my face, I retorted, "I haven't seen her body with my own eyes. Besides, it's really fishy that Dr. Sullivan left his job right after saving my wife."
After listening to my statement, the police officers launched an investigation right away.
First, we watched all the surveillance videos from the time Megan was brought in until she was put into the hearse.
As a master's degree holder in psychology, I was quite good at analyzing people's micro-expressions.
Halfway through the videos, here came Megan's parents in a hurry.
They yanked me aside and asked, "What are you doing here? Why are the cops here?"
I gave them a disdainful look and shot back, "I should be the one asking. Why aren't you at the burial?"
Then, Miranda tried to drag me away. I shook her off and said firmly, "What's going on? I'm not done with my investigation yet."
Miranda got furious and yelled, "What's the point of investigating? Megan's gone. You've seen the death certificate."
Suddenly, I remembered that Megan had signed an organ donation consent form.
I found it accidentally in the study.
She once told me her best friend forced her to sign it.
Normally, the hospital should donate her available organs before sending the body to the funeral home.
So, I declared, "I'm going to sue this hospital!"
Megan's parents looked at me as if I were a lunatic. "What are you up to now? Isn't it enough that you've caused trouble for Mr. Bennett? Now you want to sue the hospital?" Miranda shouted.
I laughed at their self-righteous expressions.
I explained, "Megan signed an organ donation agreement. By the rules, the hospital should donate her usable organs before declaring her dead and cremating the body."
Miranda immediately argued, "No way. Megan would never donate her organs. Stop talking nonsense."
Not wanting to argue with them anymore, I said, "You can leave. I'll continue my investigation."
Seeing that they couldn't persuade me, Miranda sat on the ground and started acting like a spoiled child. She shouted, "Oliver, please, stop this nonsense. It's useless."
I looked up and asked, "Oh, really? Then will you pay back the money Megan stole from my company?"
At my words, Megan's parents were completely panicked. Miranda murmured, "How... how did you know?"
I smiled and continued, "Do you know how much money she took? And is she really dead?"
Grabbing my pants, Miranda sobbed, "Didn't you see her being cremated?"
I kicked her away and, with bloodshot eyes, grabbed her face. "I'm asking you one last time. Is she really dead?" I pressed.
I knew they wouldn't tell the truth, but I'm not stupid.
I took out the recorder and said seriously, "I'll give you one more hour. If you still don't tell the truth, you'll have to pay back what Megan owes."
Miranda held me tightly and shouted, "We know nothing about the money Megan owes. You can't blame us."
When the chips are down, they couldn't care less about each other and bolt for safety.
But none of them would get away with it!
