Was it possible that I made a mistake? Absolutely not.
It was a flawless strike. One of his testicles exploded, and the other, though not completely destroyed, was also damaged.
The worst part was that his manhood was broken.
Due to the delay in getting him to the hospital, Jasper was now practically castrated.
He was in a deep depression for a long time, like a different person altogether. He would remain silent all day long, and on several nights, I could hear his sobs from the next-door bed.
He resembled me so much from back then: silent, lost in contemplation, and suffering alone.
Jasper had absolutely no recollection of how the accident occurred. That part of his memory had vanished.
It was as if even God was on my side.
Jasper's parents visited the hospital every day. His mother, Liora Wolfe, cried silently when she saw him so dejected. A few times, she wanted to scold me but was held back by his father, Vincent Wolfe.
After all, I saved Jasper's life.
I gradually recounted the accident, including how, despite my own serious injuries, I immediately pulled Jasper back from the verge of death.
The car was burned down to a metal shell, and we were taken to the hospital by kind-hearted passers-by.
As soon as I felt a bit better, I struggled out of bed and stayed by Jasper's side.
Every day, I did my utmost to lift his spirits. In his parents' eyes, I was the ideal wife for Jasper.
I loved him so deeply that I'd even sacrifice my life for him.
Even though Jasper could no longer have a normal sexual life, I'd never abandon him.
Gradually, he began to recover. It was true that love could mend all wounds.
It was a pity that the love I showed was fake.
He was discharged from the hospital before me. I had a wound infection and nearly died several times.
Jasper waited outside the operating room, praying for my safety. When I woke up, he was in tears.
"Elowen, you can't die. If you do, I won't go on living either."
I didn't think he was lying. After all, in his current situation, where could he find someone who loved him more than me?
But I really didn't care whether it was true or not.
There were a dozen steel plates in my body, and the heat wave from the explosion caused secondary injuries. In contrast, Jasper only broke a leg and had some minor cuts.
Many relatives and friends came to visit us in the hospital. They all felt sorry about what had happened. Some of the older aunts were particularly distressed when they heard that Jasper's manhood was damaged.
"Without an heir, the Wolfe family's lineage will be at stake," some relatives would murmur with concern.
"Aunt Miranda, please stop this. Jasper and I are confident that we can build a fulfilling life together. In this modern era, numerous child-free couples are thriving and finding contentment," I calmly said.
One of the aunts shook her head in disapproval and said, "How can that be a wise choice? You may enjoy the present moment, but when you're old and infirm, having no one to rely on will be a real hardship."
Another relative piped up with a suggestion, "I think you should consider adoption. A friend of mine works at an orphanage, and you two are well-qualified to adopt a child."
However, someone else quickly interjected with skepticism, "Children in orphanages usually come with various issues. These days, no one would give away a healthy child."
Then, the younger one of these aunts blurted out without thinking, "Hey, didn't you have a baby before? Why not get her back? She's your own flesh and blood. Having your own child around is far better than adopting a stranger's."
Instantly, the room fell into an awkward silence.
Jasper's face darkened with anger, and he stormed out of the room in a huff.
Everyone exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Finally, his eldest aunt, Miranda Wolfe, broke the silence and said to Liora, "Liora, I think what Elowen said has some merit. What's so wrong with having a girl? I was really disappointed when you told me you gave her away. It's the 21st century, and we should discard such gender-biased views. Bringing the child back would be a great idea. It could distract Jasper from his current troubles."
Liora hesitated for a long time, then cast a longing look at Vincent, clearly swayed by the suggestion.
