Fabian's face darkened as he asked, "What kind of gift?"
I smirked and said, "Before I give her this gift, there's a question I've been holding inside that I want to ask."
Sophie, barely containing her frustration at being upstaged, kept her tone calm. "What is it?"
I ignored Sophie and didn't respond to her.
They had carefully planned this event so that the Colemans would be especially grateful to Sophie for her donation. They would take the opportunity to award her, commemorate her kindness, and have her tearfully recount the courage she showed for love, all to earn her a good reputation.
At the same time, it would promote Fabian, who was campaigning for the hospital president position, giving him a reputation as a caring, compassionate leader.
But then I disrupted their plan.
"I especially want to ask the esteemed Dr. Todd," I said, pulling out my medical report and looking directly at Fabian. "Why did I happen to be a perfect match?
"Not only that—Sophie's a match too. Don't you find that strange?
"There are people with uremia who've waited years without finding a compatible donor ... "
I then put on my most innocent face and asked, "So how come my husband suddenly gets two perfect matches, both from people he knows?"
After a moment of stunned silence, the crowd began whispering and murmuring among themselves.
"What's going on? Could this report be fake?"
"What kind of incredible luck does he have to find two perfect matches at once?"
"No way. So the reason she won't save her husband is because this report is suspicious?"
"Hearing what the kidney donor said—I thought Amelia was a cruel person ... "
Doubtful voices grew louder, though some remained more rational.
"Even so, how can she gamble in a life-and-death situation?"
"Right. There's no way the report is fake, and there's no reason to trick her into donating her kidney."
"Hospital reports can't be wrong? They're officially stamped, and Dr. Todd has seen them."
"Professionals have checked everything—what else is there to doubt? Don't let Amelia mislead you!"
Just then, Jasper was wheeled in by a young nurse.
His face was pale, and the hospital gown hung loosely on his thin frame.
"Are you doubting that the report is fake, Amelia?"
He sounded weak, and there was a flicker of pain in his eyes.
Fabian looked at me seriously. "Amelia, forging a report is illegal. You can investigate and verify as much as you want. There's no mistake—both you and Sophie are matches for Jasper."
He was completely unfazed.
"Amelia, you don't have to cause a scene." Jasper tugged on my sleeve and looked up at me. "I know you don't want to donate. That's okay. I love you."
His voice was gentle as always.
I stepped aside to put some distance between us.
He lowered his head, looking hurt.
Listening to Fabian, I nodded thoughtfully as a decision formed in my mind.
"In that case, I've decided to get tested again," I said calmly.
The nurse who had been helping with my checkup tugged at my sleeve.
"You shouldn't do it again. More blood draws might be too much for you."
I gently patted her hand and whispered a few words.
Then I turned back and smiled. "I'm ready."
I chose another hospital nearby known for their excellent kidney transplant technology and reliable testing.
Not only did Jasper's parents push Sophie and Jasper in their wheelchairs, but Fabian came along too.
Fabian's face was full of disdain—he had never respected me.
Watching my face turn pale from the blood draw, he sneered coldly and sarcastically.
"I'm warning you, this is the last time you're causing such trouble!
"When the results come out, you better go apologize immediately to your father and mother-in-law, to Jasper, and to Sophie!
"How did I end up with such a cold-hearted daughter? You refused to save your husband, and now you are acting paranoid and bitter.
"Why cause such a scene? It's humiliating!"
Heh.
If anyone's going to be embarrassed, it's never going to be me.
I turned away and ignored him, treating his words like the nonsense they were.
